What is Contact Tracing?

Contact tracing is the ‘method of identifying and notifying individuals who have been exposed to a person diagnosed with COVID,’. This was according to Linda Niccolai, Ph.D., a professor of epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health.

Niccolai said, “The goal is for them to know about this exposure so that they can check for symptoms and self-quarantine themselves.”

The purpose of the quarantine is not to reveal other persons if they are contaminated.

In this way, it can be very beneficial to avoid continuous transmission in the population through touch tracing.

Dr. Crystal Watson, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security, said that anyone contacted by a contact tracer.

Or anyone who has had substantial contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, should be isolated and symptom-monitored for at least 14 days.

Significant contact is described as more than 15 minutes of being within six feet of another.

Under those recommendations, several individuals, including Vice President Mike Pence, should be self-quarantined. Right now at the Rose Garden event where Barrett was nominated to the Supreme Court, the virus needs up to 14 days to incubate.

What do Contact Tracers do?

Contact tracers operate with suspected or confirmed infection patients to classify the persons with whom they have had close contact when they may have been infectious.

In order to flatten the curve, contract tracers then offer advice to patients and their contacts on suitable steps such as self-quarantining.

Contact tracers aim to break the transmission chain. By questioning infected individuals to identify their contacts and suggest quarantine to prevent further transmission of the disease.

Sometimes referred to as disease detectives, touch tracers would arguably become a crucial success factor in the fight against this pandemic.

This raises the question: do we have appropriate touch tracers? The response seems, at least not yet, to be a resounding “no.”

The recently published “A National Plan to Allow Comprehensive COVID-19 Case Finding and Contact Tracing in the US” report by Johns Hopkins concludes, “Now is the time for Congress, the government, and the nation to come together to properly finance and implement contact tracing on this necessary scale.”

The goal of adding at least 100,000 new contact tracers in the United States and managing their work, while challenging, is achievable with appropriate financial

Support and a joint effort. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced plans to recruit an army of 17,000 contract tracers late last month, and preparation for contact tracing will be a requirement for the job.

Johns Hopkins and Bloomberg Philanthropies launched a new online communication monitoring course(John Hopkins Corona Virus) earlier this week that is open to those interested in training. The 6-hour online course that Coursera is offering is now available for registration.

What do CT Students Learn?

Taught by Emily Gurley, Ph.D., MPH, Johns Hopkins scientist, COVID-19 Contact Tracing (CT) is an introductory level course. This course equips students with the training they will need to become a contact tracer amid this pandemic.

The website of Johns Hopkins states, “COVID-19 Contact Tracing, the latest Coursera curriculum(John Hopkins Corona Virus). They teach the basics of interviewing people diagnosed with the virus. And also identifying their close contacts who may have been exposed, and providing them with self-quarantine guidance for two weeks.”

The course syllabus details six modules that are specifically focused on educating learners to understand the disease and its impact.

COVID-19 Contact Tracing Course Modules

  • Basics of COVID-19
  • Basics of Contact Tracing for COVID-19
  • Steps to Investigate Cases and Trace Their Contacts
  • Ethics of Contact Tracing and Technological Tools
  • Skills for Effective Communication
  • Final Assessment (Graded)

However, New York may be leading the way with its major statewide contract tracing program. All states are likely to struggle to increase their supply of qualified contact tracers. So the demand for this skill set is likely to increase dramatically.

This sector can become a viable choice for many people. With Americans facing record levels of unemployment, not only providing the required additional income. But also satisfying an emotional urge to give back and feel productive in a frighteningly uncertain period.

Benefits of Contact Tracers

While New York City has reportedly advertised jobs paying $57,000 a year with benefits for contact tracers with healthcare expertise. Other contact tracer job ads reportedly advertise $17-$22 / hour rates.

However, public health experts caution that the work is a vital one that needs not only basic knowledge of the steps and procedures needed. But also a sense of empathy and sensitivity, as contract tracers frequently hold delicate and complicated conversations.

After all, it can easily turn into a dicey conversation to clarify to someone that they will have to quarantine for 14 days when they are resistant to the idea. So touch tracers need to learn to finesse such conversations. Because time is important, they also need to learn to function quickly and thoroughly, which can be a difficult proposition.

As Americans pursue a way to get involved on a daily basis, contract tracing may indeed offer a welcome solution. In fact, the CDC emphasizes the significance of this work by insisting that contact tracing is part of the “multi-pronged approach to combating the COVID-19 pandemic.”

In the meantime, NPR’s recent article “States Nearly Doubled Plans for Contact Tracers Since NPR Surveyed Them 10 Days Ago”. Outlines the pace at which states appear to increase their contact tracer supply.

This free online course seems like such a blessing at a time when so many Americans are unemployed and so many states need qualified staff to perform this vital role, not just for the individual, but for an entire nation at war with an unseen enemy.

  6. Graduation certificate or degree certificate of the last university attended (or an attested document certifying that the applicant will graduate from the school, where applicable)
  7. Abstract of the last thesis
Application Guidelines:

Note 1: These documents must be written in either Japanese or English. A document written in any other language must be attached to a Japanese or English translation.

Note 2: Photographs attached to the original application must be originals; copies are not acceptable.

Note 3: Field of specialization and research program documents should clearly describe the applicant’s own research program because it will serve as important materials for placement of the applicant at a university.

Note 4: The academic transcripts of the last university attended should be prepared to show the grade scale applied and the grades earned by the applicant on all the subjects studied for each year studied at a university department/faculty and a graduate school. (A degree certificate or a graduation certificate simply showing the ranking of the applicant at graduation will not substitute for academic transcripts.)

Note 5: The graduation certificate and the degree certificate obtained from the last university attended may be substituted for by a photocopy thereof provided that the copy is attested by the authorized person of the university.

Note 6: For abstracts of the thesis, abstracts of the graduation thesis and presented papers will suffice. Please note that these abstracts will be used as basic data for evaluation of the applicant’s academic ability.

Application Deadline

As has been stated earlier, the application time and processes may vary from country to country. You are advised to visit the Japanese Embassy in your home country.
