What is Contact Tracing?

Contact tracing is the ‘method of identifying and notifying individuals who have been exposed to a person diagnosed with COVID,’. This was according to Linda Niccolai, Ph.D., a professor of epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health.

Niccolai said, “The goal is for them to know about this exposure so that they can check for symptoms and self-quarantine themselves.”

The purpose of the quarantine is not to reveal other persons if they are contaminated.

In this way, it can be very beneficial to avoid continuous transmission in the population through touch tracing.

Dr. Crystal Watson, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security, said that anyone contacted by a contact tracer.

Or anyone who has had substantial contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, should be isolated and symptom-monitored for at least 14 days.

Significant contact is described as more than 15 minutes of being within six feet of another.

Under those recommendations, several individuals, including Vice President Mike Pence, should be self-quarantined. Right now at the Rose Garden event where Barrett was nominated to the Supreme Court, the virus needs up to 14 days to incubate.

What do Contact Tracers do?

Contact tracers operate with suspected or confirmed infection patients to classify the persons with whom they have had close contact when they may have been infectious.

In order to flatten the curve, contract tracers then offer advice to patients and their contacts on suitable steps such as self-quarantining.

Contact tracers aim to break the transmission chain. By questioning infected individuals to identify their contacts and suggest quarantine to prevent further transmission of the disease.

Sometimes referred to as disease detectives, touch tracers would arguably become a crucial success factor in the fight against this pandemic.

This raises the question: do we have appropriate touch tracers? The response seems, at least not yet, to be a resounding “no.”

The recently published “A National Plan to Allow Comprehensive COVID-19 Case Finding and Contact Tracing in the US” report by Johns Hopkins concludes, “Now is the time for Congress, the government, and the nation to come together to properly finance and implement contact tracing on this necessary scale.”

The goal of adding at least 100,000 new contact tracers in the United States and managing their work, while challenging, is achievable with appropriate financial

Support and a joint effort. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced plans to recruit an army of 17,000 contract tracers late last month, and preparation for contact tracing will be a requirement for the job.

Johns Hopkins and Bloomberg Philanthropies launched a new online communication monitoring course(John Hopkins Corona Virus) earlier this week that is open to those interested in training. The 6-hour online course that Coursera is offering is now available for registration.

What do CT Students Learn?

Taught by Emily Gurley, Ph.D., MPH, Johns Hopkins scientist, COVID-19 Contact Tracing (CT) is an introductory level course. This course equips students with the training they will need to become a contact tracer amid this pandemic.

The website of Johns Hopkins states, “COVID-19 Contact Tracing, the latest Coursera curriculum(John Hopkins Corona Virus). They teach the basics of interviewing people diagnosed with the virus. And also identifying their close contacts who may have been exposed, and providing them with self-quarantine guidance for two weeks.”

The course syllabus details six modules that are specifically focused on educating learners to understand the disease and its impact.

COVID-19 Contact Tracing Course Modules

  • Basics of COVID-19
  • Basics of Contact Tracing for COVID-19
  • Steps to Investigate Cases and Trace Their Contacts
  • Ethics of Contact Tracing and Technological Tools
  • Skills for Effective Communication
  • Final Assessment (Graded)

However, New York may be leading the way with its major statewide contract tracing program. All states are likely to struggle to increase their supply of qualified contact tracers. So the demand for this skill set is likely to increase dramatically.

This sector can become a viable choice for many people. With Americans facing record levels of unemployment, not only providing the required additional income. But also satisfying an emotional urge to give back and feel productive in a frighteningly uncertain period.

Benefits of Contact Tracers

While New York City has reportedly advertised jobs paying $57,000 a year with benefits for contact tracers with healthcare expertise. Other contact tracer job ads reportedly advertise $17-$22 / hour rates.

However, public health experts caution that the work is a vital one that needs not only basic knowledge of the steps and procedures needed. But also a sense of empathy and sensitivity, as contract tracers frequently hold delicate and complicated conversations.

After all, it can easily turn into a dicey conversation to clarify to someone that they will have to quarantine for 14 days when they are resistant to the idea. So touch tracers need to learn to finesse such conversations. Because time is important, they also need to learn to function quickly and thoroughly, which can be a difficult proposition.

As Americans pursue a way to get involved on a daily basis, contract tracing may indeed offer a welcome solution. In fact, the CDC emphasizes the significance of this work by insisting that contact tracing is part of the “multi-pronged approach to combating the COVID-19 pandemic.”

In the meantime, NPR’s recent article “States Nearly Doubled Plans for Contact Tracers Since NPR Surveyed Them 10 Days Ago”. Outlines the pace at which states appear to increase their contact tracer supply.

This free online course seems like such a blessing at a time when so many Americans are unemployed and so many states need qualified staff to perform this vital role, not just for the individual, but for an entire nation at war with an unseen enemy.

Conclusion

Global public health, infectious disease, and emergency preparedness experts from Johns Hopkins were at the forefront of the international response to COVID-19.

Johns Hopkins is launching an online course to train touch tracer armies to slow the spread of COVID-19.

The free course, created with Bloomberg Philanthropies, is available to everyone in the world via Coursera.

A new Coursera class is now available to train touch tracers on the principles of public health strategy. This was developed by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, which many consider crucial to slowing the spread of COVID-19.

In conclusion, the free six-hour course is open to everyone.

But taking and passing it would be a prerequisite for the State of New York to recruit thousands of touch tracers to tackle the pandemic.

What is International Law?

International law is a system of treaties and agreements between nations which governs how nations communicate with other nations, other nations’ citizens, and other nations’ businesses.

Typically, international law falls into two different categories.

Private international law deals with disputes between private entities, such as individuals or companies, which have an important relationship with more than one country.

For instance, lawsuits arising from the leakage of toxic gas from industrial plants owned by Union Carbide, a U.S. corporation, in Bhopal, India, would be considered a matter of private international law.

The relationships between nations are concerned with public international law. These include international conduct standards, maritime laws, economic law, diplomatic law, environmental law, human rights law, and humanitarian law.

In a set of treaties, certain concepts of public international law are written or codified, but others are not written down anywhere.

However, these are known as customary rules, and by doing nothing, nations consent to them.

Since most international law is governed by treaties, the law is usually enforced by individual countries.

There are a few global organizations, however, that enforce certain treaties. The United Nations, which has 192 member states, is the most notable example.

To be considered for a Vanier CGS, you must:

  • be nominated by only one Canadian institution, which must have received a Vanier CGS quota;

  • intend to pursue, in the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of results, full-time doctoral (or a joint graduate research program such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) studies and research at the nominating institution; For joint graduate research program, only the PhD portion of a joint graduate research program is eligible for funding.

Applicants that fall into this category have access to the 32-month window whether or not they were previously enrolled in a Master’s program; or
  • have completed no more than 32 months of full-time study in their doctoral program by May 1, 2021 if accelerated directly from a Bachelor’s to a PhD (no time spent in a Master’s program); or
  • have completed no more than 32 months of full-time study in their doctoral program by May 1, 2021 if accelerated from a Master’s degree into a Doctoral program without obtaining the Master’s degree.
  • have achieved a first-class average, as determined by your institution, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Candidates are encouraged to contact the institution for its definition of a first-class average; and
  • must not hold, or have held, a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC to undertake or complete a doctoral program.

For more details on these eligibility criteria (which is very important for all students), you need to visit this official scholarship webpage. Also, feel free to leave a comment below this post. One of our team will respond to you.

How to Apply

Our students are advised to avoid the mistake of previous applicants who failed to adhere to these eligibility regulations.

First, those wishing to apply for a Vanier CGS should verify that the institution to which they are applying for doctoral studies has a Vanier CGS quota.

They must then inform the institution that they wish to be considered for a Vanier CGS. That is the only way you can be considered by the institution, and also stand better chances of winning the scholarship for 2021.

For further details and more application guidelines, students should visit the official website for the Vanier CGS 2021.

Vanier CGS 2021 Application Deadlines

Aspiring candidates for this scholarship should carefully read through this page because it has contributed largely to the failure to secure the application in the previous years.

This year, we are working much heard here at Jobreaders, to relay the hearts of these scholarship organizers, and help students with what they need to present.

The envisioned result is to see you in one of the best Universities in the world, under scholarships or self-funds.

There are two deadlines pertaining to the 2020-2021 competition:

  1. Institution internal deadline: Following the student’s identification in ResearchNet of the institution proposed for doctoral study (see Task 10), an additional deadline date and time will appear at the top of each page. This is the deadline by which your application must be submitted to the institution through ResearchNet. This deadline is set and controlled by each institution. You will not be able to submit your application past this precise date and time.
  2. Program deadline: Institutions must forward their selected nominations to the Vanier CGS program by November 3, 2020 (20:00 Eastern Time).

Completing a Vanier CGS application

  • Visit the Selection Committee Guide to familiarize yourself with the selection criteria and how the committee will evaluate each criterion.
  • Bold text and stars indicate mandatory fields.
  • The status of all tasks must be indicated as complete in order for you to submit your application.

June 20, 2020 by Nnnanyere 3 Comments

Aside from getting admission to the Institution, the Birmingham City University Scholarship 2021 will go a long way in ensuring you sail through various courses in the University, as a self-funded from any country in the world. Commonwealth Scholarship 2021 for Nigerian Students (Study in UK)

This page is a direct cull from the university official portal regarding the 2021 Birmingham City University Admission, with some of the scholarship portions for you.

However, as is accustomed to Jobreaders publications, we help you understand the nature of the offers you are in for, which helps you ascertain your eligibility for any of the opportunities published on this platform.

Tuition Fees for International Students

Your tuition fees (per year) cover normal tuition, examination costs, and membership of the Students’ Union. Fees for non-EU students are higher because the University does not receive any external support funding from the British Government.

To find out how much your fees will be, please refer to the ‘Fees and How to Apply’ tab of the course you want to study.

How to pay your tuition fees

Tuition fees are paid by equal installments at the beginning of each semester. Fees must be paid in Pounds Sterling.

Birmingham City University

Stories of alumni have confirmed the claim of the University as having unmoved confidence and being a proud and diverse community of students, who are striving to achieve their career goals and transform their lives.

As a career brand, we have also added this UK University as one of the best you can aim at, as a student who wants the best from the global scale of institutional ranking.

However, this will be an incomplete publication to hit the submit bottom without making reference to the tuition fees in the University.

If you have followed our previous publications on the best University in the United Kingdom for international students, you would have found out the style of choices I suggest for readers here at Jobreaders.

But that not being the case, one of the reasons for the Birmingham City University scholarship 2021 is due to the cost of studies in this school. It is comparatively higher for international students regarding a single fact the schools do not receive any other financial assistance from the Government. So, this necessitates you taking a look at the cost of studies at the University.

Tuition Fees

If we make you an offer of a place on a course on the basis that you are an overseas student, you will have to pay the higher rate ‘overseas’ tuition fee. However, if you can show a relevant connection to the UK or the EU, you may be classed as a ‘home’ student and be exempt from international fees.

If you fit into one of the following categories, you could be eligible to pay ‘home’ fees. You’ll need to complete a Fee Status Questionnaire to help us determine your status (see below).

  • Category 1 – Those who are ‘settled’ in the UK and meet the main residence requirement
  • Category 2 – Non-UK EEA Migrant Workers
  • Category 3 – Swiss ‘Worker’ and family
  • Category 4 – EU Nationals and family
  • Category 5 – Non-UK EU Nationals who have spent at least three years in the UK
  • Category 6 – EU National/Family member with Right of Permanent Residence
  • Category 7 – ‘Settle’ people who utilise a Right of Residence
  • Category 8 – Child of Swiss National
  • Category 9 – Child of a Turkish worker
  • Category 10 – Person with Refugee status or Humanitarian Protection and family.

You can download the Fee Status Questionnaire form and return it for assessment to [email protected] You must also send us copies of all relevant documents to support your claim. The rules relating to which students are charged the higher rate ‘overseas’ tuition fees are determined by the UK Government.

In addition to paying tuition fees, you’ll need living expenses to cover things like accommodation, food, heating, travel and books, and stationery.

To study in the UK, you will require a Tier 4 (General) adult student visa. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) will require you to have at least £9,135 in your personal bank account for 28 days before submitting your application.

This figure is an estimate of your basic living costs during the first nine months of your studies, which covers most expenses after tuition fees.

The actual amount you’ll need depends on the type of accommodation you choose and your personal lifestyle.

In addition to fees, you will probably need to buy books and equipment for your course. You should also consider your living cost .

Living costs

It is important to carefully consider the financial implications of studying in the United Kingdom. In addition to paying tuition fees, you will need to cover your living expenses, including accommodation, food, heating, travel, books, and stationery, while you are studying in the UK.

The UK Border Agency requires you to have a minimum amount of savings in your bank account before it will issue you with a student visa to enable you to study in the UK.

In summary, we can agree on the total living cost as an international student using the table below:

General expensesApproximate yearly cost
University accommodation (from 39 – 51 weeks)From £5,483 to £7,013
Food, and other shopping£2,600

Honestly, the cost of living and studying in the United Kingdom might be very exorbitant for students from developing nations.

This is why we always recommend you apply for any of the scholarship opportunities provided by the University. This leads us to the City University pages, to help you know what you are in for.

We offer a range of scholarship opportunities for international undergraduates which you may be eligible to receive or apply for.

Undergraduate Scholarships

There are various scholarship packages for students in the University, but for different students. This scholarship is for the   non-EU only and we believe that you might be eligible to apply.

Every year we provide a number of scholarships recognising the talents of our international students, which will be applied towards the cost of your tuition fees.

All non-EU international students enrolling on an undergraduate course in September 2020 will be eligible for a scholarship of up to £2,000. This is awarded based on your academic background.

The following courses are exempt from this scholarship:

  • ACCA
  • Conservatoire courses (Music and Theatre)

Status: Open – scholarship offer will be made when we make you a course offer.

Please note that Birmingham City University Scholarship scholarships are only available to self-funding students and those studying on a full time course for at least one academic year.

Undergraduate Scholarships – EU only

To welcome all new EU undergraduate degree students starting in 2021, we’re giving away at least £150 worth of credit to spend in a host of ways, on books and a range of learning materials. Even better, it doesn’t have to be repaid.

The following courses are exempt from this scholarship:

  • ACCA
  • Conservatoire courses (Music and Theatre)

Status: Open – scholarship offer will be made when we make you a course offer.

Prompt Payment Bursary

If you pay your tuition fees in full before travelling to, or during your enrolment in the UK, you will be entitled to a £300 prompt payment discount.

This discount applies to the amount you owe after any scholarships or bursaries have been deducted from your tuition fee.

The following courses are exempt from this scholarship:

  • ACCA

You need a Bank Account

Studies in Birmingham City University are study in the UK and therefore, here are the documents you must have to to open a bank account:

  • Passport
  • Letter of enrolment confirming your UK and home addresses (available after enrolment from the Faculty Course Office).
  • Your University unconditional offer letter that you received at your home residential address (the bank is looking for evidence that the university has corresponded with you at your place of residence).
  • Your University or private accommodation contract for your term-time accommodation.
  • A recent bank statement or credit card statement from your home bank translated in to English and containing your residential address (the statement must be less than three months old).

UK banks operate careful checks on each application before opening an account and you may have to wait for a couple of weeks before your account is opened.

Because of this, we suggest you bring around £300 in cash and a further £300 in travellers cheques to cover you for the first month.

We also strongly advise students to take out travel insurance in case you lose any money or personal documents, or face travel delays.

If you’re bringing a bankers draft with you, it should be in sterling and drawn on a UK bank so that you can avoid unnecessary delays in accessing your money.
