Form, Length, and Financing of Doctoral Scholarship at Ghent University

These grants take the form of a so-called “sandwich” scholarship: the recipient receives a scholarship to work for a Ph.D. at the University of Ghent for 24 months (within a period of 48 months).

The scholarship holder can earn a monthly salary from Ghent University only for the times during which the scholarship holder works at Ghent University.

The rest (24 months) of the PhD thesis will be carried out at the partner university in the South, for which this scholarship does not have any funds.

The Doctoral Scholarship is not Renewable.

The portion of the study that will be carried out in the South must be sponsored by the partner institution in the South (e.g. local Ph.D. scholarship or salary) or an international government/funding agency/partner institution (excluding Ghent University).

In order for students to be eligible for this funding, they must be able to show that they have secured funding or a 24-month grant to fund part of their study to be carried out in the South.

Candidates must therefore show that they would be adequately removed from teaching or other duties for the part of the Ph.D. study carried out in the South to be able to completely focus on their Ph.D. research.

Applicants are entitled to contribute up to 10% of their time (full-time appointment) to other duties (teaching and other duties) while employed in the South on their PhD studies.

Mobility Scheme

Over a cycle of 4 years, the scholarship recipient may opt to split the Ghent University scholarship into many study cycles.

For this kind of scholarship, the scholarship recipient has to respect the minimum sandwich timetable.

Students need to initiate and finish a study stay in Ghent for a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 12 months.

Between 1/10/2021 and 28/02/2022, the first study stays in Ghent needs to begin.

Between the first and last research stay in Ghent, at least 24 months of a locally funded research stay in the South must be arranged.

Degree

Students are expected to obtain a Ph.D. degree from Ghent University, either as a 100% Ghent University degree or as a Joint Ph.D. degree from Ghent University (in which case a joint Ph.D. arrangement must be signed with the partner university in the South latest after the start of the scholarship).

If the grant recipient of Ghent University accepts a single Ph.D. degree from another institution instead of Ghent University, the latter will recover the student’s scholarship.

For this call to be admissible, any of the following conditions must be met:

  • Candidates ought to come from a developing country and have the nationality of that country.
  • Students require the full help (and invitation) of a professor at Ghent University who is able to serve as their Ph.D. supervisor in Ghent. Students will not request this scholarship without this funding.
  • Students must expect to receive a Ph.D. degree from Ghent University, and exchange Ph.D. students are not qualified.
  • There must be an assurance that the applicant will be eligible to operate at a partner university based in a developing country on the Ph.D. project.
  • At the Partner Institution or Research Center, a nearby or local Ph.D. supervisor is required.
  • A written and signed document by the partner university authority specifying that the claimant is either a Ph.D. student or a member of the staff of this university/research center and earns a local (full-time) scholarship or payment for a duration of at least 24 months while working for a Ph.D. at the partner university in the South.
  • In this argument, the partner university in the South must therefore ensure that the claimant will be adequately removed from teaching or other activities to be able to focus entirely on Ph.D. studies when operating in the South.
  • Applicants are entitled to devote up to 10% of their time (full-time appointment) to other responsibilities (teaching and other duties).
  • The study ideas in the partner country (in the South) must be applicable to progress.
