About Jimma University

Jimma University is a public higher education institution that was established in December 1999 by the merger of Jimma College of Agriculture (founded in 1952) and Jimma Institute of Health Sciences (established in 1983).

The two campuses in the city of Jimma are located 352 km southwest of Addis Ababa and cover an area of 167 hectares.

For Innovative Community-Centered Education in Ethiopia, JU is the first higher learning institution.

The university adopted the name of the city for comparatively sound reasons. For one thing, Jimma is one of the largest towns in the world, renowned for its production of coffee.

Secondly, the seat of the King of the Five Gibe States was Jimma during the 19th century.

The main campus is in the area of Aba Jifar’s old palace, which is now a free museum.

Jimma is renowned for its attractive green landscape and coffee production during the year, among other things.

Jimma University was founded in the 80s on the basis of the union between the Jimma Institute of Health Sciences and the Jimma College of Agriculture.

In their respective fields, both organizations became national leaders and with the unification, the creation of a modern, multifaceted, and development-oriented organization was able to emerge from the two former specialized institutions.

As a government, Ethiopia was determined during the 1990s to address the important development challenges facing the region.

In all sectors of society and in all countries, such problems have been established. Given this fact, it was important to establish new structures in a way that would be conducive to the growth of the country.

For the country’s wider growth, a well-conceived and applicable institutional development scheme for higher education was appropriate.

Many new higher education institutions have been developed in the world, while existing institutions have been improved and enlarged.

No higher education institution in the country is more representative of this expansion and strengthening of programs than Jimma University.

Though Jimma University was outside the capital, it had the capacity to uphold a level of education not found elsewhere in the region.

Intellectual and intellectual operation at Jimma University has become a center that draws opinion leaders, innovators, academics, and leaders from around the world.

Jimma University is also called the nation’s highest-ranking public school, and this comes from each academic program’s excellence.

Jimma University has an international tradition of cooperation that has set the tone for it to be a genuinely global organization.

Jimma University’s parent organization, the Jimma College of Agriculture, was founded in the 1960s with foreign collaborators from the University of Oklahoma in the United States to discuss agricultural matters.

For decades, Jimma University has hosted partners from all over the world. Global teachers from India and the Philippines, Cuban doctors and construction professionals, American and European doctors, and public health professionals, and Asian development partners from South Korea, Japan, and China are among other long-term allies.

Jimma University is also regarded by international partners as a special, but little-known, major research, and higher education institution.

A host of external collaborators, academics, and writers have published publications successfully, participated in a fundamental study that is nationally relevant, and worked at Jimma University on Ph.D. dissertations.

Today, with a number of collaborators from all over the world, Jimma University has several Memorandums of Understanding.

Jimma University stresses that where the most complex group of foreign collaborators emerges, the strength of cooperation is strongest.

In view of this, Jimma University today has collaborations with numerous collaborators from Africa, East, and Western Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, East Asia, Latin America, and North America. you can also check this related post List of Academic Programs offered at Jimma University in 2021.

This is applied to the theoretical and practical preparation of trained and skilled teaching practitioners, making it a preferred destination for learning in various fields of health and medical sciences.

Over the last ten years, the Jimma Institute of Technology has shown impressive improvements. It has become one of the country’s largest technology institutes with high-tech labs and laboratory services, attracting 15,000 campus students providing instruction in different engineering disciplines at the level of BSc, MSc, and Ph.D.

School of Postgraduate Studies

The School’s goal is to cultivate qualified practitioners at the graduate and postgraduate levels in the different disciplines of university learning who can respond to the needs of society.

Created in 2003, the Jimma University School of Graduate Studies (SGS) educates the next generation of experts and scholars to further advance knowledge in their chosen fields and to apply new skills to meet society’s needs.

The mission of the School of Graduate Studies is to initiate, organize, and manage a wide range of multidisciplinary graduate programs on the Jimma campus, at professional sector locations, and throughout the virtual world.

SGS offers thesis and study programs at the master’s, undergraduate and post-doctoral levels.

The school is a center of academic achievement with a multicultural focus that combines academic preparation, research, and community service. Our students represent the country’s best and most accomplished.

They come to research with us from diverse cultures and personal perspectives in order to hone their talents in order to recognize, evaluate, and intervene before they return to their professional positions in society’s greatest challenges.

We are proud that over 1000 students with a number of degrees graduate each year.

Our faculty, too, brings expertise in the real world and academic performance to graduate studies.

In order to create a teaching-learning atmosphere that will promote the sharing of innovative ideas and the transfer of high-value expertise for the creation of professionalism of the highest level, our teaching staff, both Ethiopian and foreign, apply realistic, real-life knowledge along with theory.

In order to educate students in non-traditional, off-campus settings, the School of Graduate Studies acknowledges that education in the 21st century will rely on the ability to harness technology.

In view of this, the School has pursued a series of dynamic projects by distinctive means to offer high-quality graduate education to a range of students.

Working with our clients, Washington DC-based Lucy Consultancy and Addis Ababa-based ABH Services, we educate virtual realm engineers, public health practitioners, and business administration professionals with the most up-to-date and applicable technical expertise and skills.

On industry sites, such as the Gibe Dam site, we also offer courses that enable professionals working to pursue their postgraduate degrees while keeping their professional positions.

As a regional higher education institute, the School of Graduate Studies is also expanding.

We are proud to have opened a campus in Hargeisa, Somaliland, so the Somali people can benefit from our educational theory and practice.

The School of Graduate Studies plans to further extend its programs on campus, at more field sites, and in the virtual world at Jimma University.

The School also aims to expand the number of masters, Ph.D., technical qualifications provided by the programs we deliver while simultaneously increasing the quality of programs created.

The standard of our programs and the advantages our graduates offer to society can only improve through cooperation, deliberation, and a relentless drive to pursue academic excellence important to professionalism in the 21st century.
