Montgomery College of Nursing

Nursing Programs

Associate of Science (AS) in Nursing

This is a two-year program that trains and teaches students to become professional nurses. The graduate of this kind of program takes the Registered Nurse (RN) licensing examination.

To be admitted for this course, students must first and foremost apply to the college and be admitted with a temporary major of pre-nursing, or they may enter through general admission. Or through any other major with open admission.

Applicants are expected to have a high school diploma or GED, or a minimum of 2.5 GPA and must take that TEAS examination.

Applicant students will also need to complete the prerequisite classes of techniques of reading and writing I and Principles of Biology to be eligible to apply. 

Any applicant that wants to qualify for precedence admissions must also complete techniques of reading and writing II or writing for Technology and Business, Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II, and also survey of college mathematics.

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and Military Medics and corpsmen to RN

This course of study allows LPNs and the military medics or corpsmen to reach the third semester of the AS in the nursing course, after completing the prerequisites and the change in the summer semester before their nursing classes resume.

For an applicant to apply for this program, they need to submit an application, transcripts, and a letter of reference, and take the TEAS examination.  

The prerequisite for this program is Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Techniques, and general psychology. 

The college also recommends students to take the following courses before applying: Microbiology, Techniques of Reading and Writing II, Introduction to sociology, and an Arts and also humanities elective.

Certified Nursing Assistant and Geriatric Nursing Assistant (CAN/ GNA)

Applicants wishing to be CNAs must take the CAN Classroom and clinical programs. Students need to be 18 at least and have a social security number and must pass the mandatory reading test. 

Immediately after completing the course, students that want to work as GNAs will be able to take the exams.

This type of continuing education class is for RNs who have left the nursing profession and wish to return. The students need to show they once held an RN license to register.

Foreign Nurse Graduates

Any foreign nurse graduates wishing to apply to Montgomery College will need to submit a letter from the Maryland Board of Nursing that identifies what programs they need to become licensed in Maryland, as well as a copy of their Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing School report. 

They will also be required to take Basic Health Assessment with a C or higher, and then be eligible for admission into the programs they need.

  • December 20, 2020: Official end of the fall semester.

Winter Session 2020-2021

  • October 5, 2020: Winter course offerings published online for viewing only.
  • October 19, 2020: Winter registration opens.
  • December 21, 2020: Winter classes begin (all online).

Spring Semester 2021

  • October 19, 2020: Spring course offerings published online for viewing only.
  • November 2, 2020: Spring priority registration opens.
  • November 9, 2020: Spring general registration opens.
  • January 25, 2021: Spring classes begin.

Admission Requirements

You must always be able to attend class on the Takoma Park/silver spring campus.

You must have the requirement and a minimum GPA of 2.5 for you to be considered.

This GPA score is based on your most recent 24 college credits earned. If you are a recent high school graduate with fewer than 24 school level credits, official transcripts are required, and also the high school record will also be included.

For programs that are demanding the TEAS test: GPA will be used for eligibility purposes only. Applicants may only take the test twice for 12 months. The most recent grade will be used.

The Health Science admission will be based on programs completed and grades earned through the fall semester only.

The spring admission (nursing only) will be based on programs completed through the short spring semester only.

Students who are eligibily selected for admissions into each Health Science program will be notified by certified mail.

The complete course acceptance will be dependent upon the satisfactory background and also checks drug test results for clinical rotation placements.

It also recommends that applicants with transfer credits view their transcript evaluations before the application deadline to make sure that they have the programs that are needed for admissions into their program of choice.

The transcript evaluations can be checked by logging into my-MC It is the applicant’s responsibility to make sure that all the required documents are submitted to the Records and Registration office before the application deadline. 

Applicant students who have completed all or some of the priority courses for their course of choice will be given first consideration.
