Types of UAE Visa: Cost and Career Opportunities

These are the types of UAE Visa, their cost of procurement, and opportunities attached to any of the diplomatic passes into the rapidly developing United Arab Emirates.

In recent times, has attracted massive global interest for career opportunities, tourism, and other travel purposes, and this guide is designed to help you realign with your personal reasons and what to expect.  

The various types of UAE Visa forms that are available in the UAE have been a little elusive due to incomplete and inaccurate details on the internet.

But if you study hard enough you will find that there are essentially seven different UAE visa forms and a patient permit issued by the government of the United Arab Emirates.

Each of these visas has slight procedural variations, but the fundamental difference lies in the reason for which these visas are intended. Therefore when visiting the UAE, selecting a specific UAE visa form would strictly depend on your target.

Different Types of Visa in UAE

According to the United Arab Emirate (UAE), there are 7 different types of Visa.

Business Visa

A business visa is part of the Golden Visa scheme that requires foreigners and their dependents to receive a long-term visa.

A qualified entrepreneur is someone who, at some stage in his career, has set up a company of his own and wishes to do so in the UAE again.

Eligibility Criteria for business visa

Professionals are eligible to apply for a business visa from any country with entrepreneurial experience.

A qualified entrepreneur is someone who at some stage in his career has set up a company of his own, and wishes to do so in the UAE again.

To obtain the candidates for the business, you must:

  • As an entrepreneur, be able to substantiate your knowledge.
  • A controlling shareholder of a start-up or a member of its senior management was a majority shareholder.
  • Be willing to move to the UAE and create a company in one of the seven emirates legally.
  • Have a business concept or a business strategy in the UAE that you want to bring to life.

Furthermore, applicants must pass the Federal Authority for Identification and Citizenship standards, including a background check and health examination, successfully.

However, the ability to qualify for a business visa does not prove that the visa will be given to the applicant.

The request and the attached documents are reviewed by specialist committees and accepted accordingly.

Once accepted, the applicant will be expected to comply with the requirements of the Federal Identity and Citizenship Authority in order for the visa to be issued.

Applying for a business visa

You would need to get your nomination accepted by an incubator sponsored by the UAE government currently, AREA2071 in Dubai and HUB71 in Abu Dhabi) in order to apply for a business visa. You will be invited to apply for the visa through the Federal Identity and Citizenship Authority once your nomination has been accepted. The nominating process is as follows:

  • Visit and build a new account at https:/business.goldenvisa.ae.Log in and apply for nomination once your account is confirmed. The site was active at the time of this post but you simply visit our site for more updates about the business visa.
  • Send the application you have finished. The process could take up to 30 days to review your application.

Note:

  • You will receive a connection to upload the necessary documents and complete your visa application if your nomination is successful.
  • Please apply again after 90 days if your nomination is not accepted.

Receiving visa

If your appointment has been accepted, via the website of the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, you will be invited to complete the visa application. You will receive an email with more details about how to receive your visa once it has been completed.

If you live outside the UAE, you will be granted a six-month visa to enter, explore, and settle in the UAE. You will be expected to turn it into a residency permit before your temporary visa expires.

If you already live in the UAE, a one-month temporary visa will be granted to you, and you will be expected to turn it into a residency permit before it expires.

In both cases, SERVICES1 in Emirates Towers, Dubai, or directly via the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, will quickly and conveniently convert your visas to residency.

The benefits of a business visa

The applicant is allowed, once the visa has been issued, to:

  • Enter the country with a multiple-entry visa for a term of six months to facilitate business establishment procedures.
  • Nominate up to three of the senior workers of his organization to gain citizenship.

Subject to the conditions and specifications as laid down by the Federal Identity and Citizenship Authority, all visa holders will be permitted to sponsor their dependents.

Tourist Visa

The tourist visa is for those who do not qualify for an arrival visa or visa-free entry to the UAE. Tourist visas may be issued for individual tourists from around the world who are qualified.

Unless they are traveling with their guardians, females under the age of 18 are not eligible to apply for this form of visa.

More importantly, children under 18 years of age accompanying adults can obtain a free visa for their visit from 15 July to 15 September each year, according to a Cabinet resolution passed in July 2018.

Tourist visas to the UAE can be issued for 30 days or 90 days period, single or multiple entries, depending on your schedule.

Who can apply for your tourist visa?

Visas for tourists through airlines

In order for your visa to be arranged by them, each airline has some conditions that must be met. Flying with them is one of the requirements. Check the following UAE-based airlines for visa forms, services, terms, and conditions for more current and precise information:

Tourist visas through agencies and hotels

In the UAE, approved travel agents and hotels can arrange a tourist visa for you as long as you buy the ticket from them and book a hotel reservation with a particular hotel.

In partnership with a local tour operator, you can also contact travel agencies in your country for any tourist packages made available to the UAE.

Checking the legitimacy of the travel agents you are working with and refraining from paying or sending copies of your official documents is crucial before the tour operator is 100 percent sure that you are genuine. For verification, you may seek the support of the UAE embassy in your country.

Note: No tourist visas are issued by the UAE Embassies. In order to obtain a UAE tourist visa, you must contact one of the airlines based in the UAE, a tour agency, or a hotel (where you plan to stay) in the UAE, which will apply for a visa on your behalf to the official visa-issuing authorities in the UAE.

Renewing or extending your tourist visa

Both forms of visits and tourist visas can be extended twice for a duration of 30 days, upon request and after the effective approval of the competent authority. Without the need to depart the country, this can be accomplished.

Visitors and tourists can apply for a second renewal before the first renewal expires at AED 600 for each renewal cycle.

Visa overstays who do not renew, as stated above will be liable to pay a fine of AED 100 for each day of their overstay, to be determined 10 days after the expiry of the visa.

However, for the following groups, the current extension rule does not apply:

Visitors and tourists in GCC countries who are citizens

GCC nationals accompanying residents

Those on a special permit for entry

Those with a 96-hour special-mission permit.

Transit Visa

You need a transit visa if you are not one of the nationalities eligible for visas upon arrival or visa-free entry to the UAE.

Prior to your trip, only the UAE-based airlines you travel through can arrange your transit visa. The agency can also help you get your visa if your trip is through a travel agency, but all visas are routed through the airline. By one of the following means, airline agents can apply online for transit visas:

The online platforms are provided by the appropriate Directorate-General for Citizenship and Foreign Affairs (GDRFA).

Duration of transit visa

A transit visa is issued for a period of either 48 hours or 96 hours. Please notice that it cannot be extended to 96 hours once a 48-hour visa is released.

 A Transit visas for 48 hours

48-hour transit visas are given free of charge to travelers transiting via airports in the UAE. You need to apply in advance for the visa via an airline operating in the UAE.

This visa cannot be extended, nor is it renewable. The visa is valid for 48 hours after entering the UAE, and you must leave the UAE within 48 hours of your arrival.

In order to get a transit visa, you have the following:

  • A passport or travel document valid for at least three months
  • A self-image against a white background
  • An onward ticket reservation to a third destination, rather than the one you come from.

A Transit visas for 96 hours

A 96-hour transit visa is provided for passengers traveling via UAE airports for a fee of AED 50. You need to apply in advance for the visa via an airline operating in the UAE.

This visa cannot be extended, nor is it renewable. The visa is valid for 96 hours after entering the UAE, and you must leave the UAE within 96 hours of your arrival.

You must have the following In order to get a transit visa:

  • A passport or travel document that is valid for a period of six months
  • A self-image against a white background
  • An onward ticket reservation to a third destination, rather than the one you come from.

Note 

Any state local or private agency can impose no fees or additional amounts. For each passenger passing through the UAE airports, a departure fee of AED 30 is imposed.

Student Visa

A student’s visa is for students studying in the UAE at a university or college. The student must be at least eighteen years old.

The UAE government approved a decision on 24 November 2018 to award outstanding students a 5-year visa.

Conditions of eligibility for a 5-year visa are:

  • Students from high schools, whether public or private, must graduate with a score of at least 95 percent.
  • University students must graduate from universities inside and outside the nation with a distinctive GPA of at least 3.75.

Primary conditions of a visa for a student 

The applicant must receive an official letter of acceptance from the university at which he is studying in order to gain a freshman student’s visa.

What is the validity term for a student’s Visa?

A student visa is currently provided for a term of one year and is valid for a similar period on the basis of official proof of continuation of studies issued by the appropriate UAE higher education institution where the student is admitted.

Who can provide a student’s visa?

In the UAE, student visas may be obtained either by residents who sponsor their children or by one of the universities/colleges accredited in the UAE.

Visa applications are processed by visa authorities represented in each emirate by the appropriate Directorate-General of Citizenship and Foreign Affairs.

How will universities and colleges guarantee their students a visa? 

Accredited UAE universities and schools, whether foreign students or students already residing in the UAE, can obtain a visa for their students.

In order to know the basic criteria for admission and visa procedures, students should refer to the terms and conditions specified in each university or college.

Admission to one of the universities in the UAE does not guarantee the issuance of a visa.

The issuance of a visa is subject to certain conditions, including the passing of a medical fitness test, a safety check, and the approval of the GDRFA in the emirate concerned.

These are the available platforms for applying in the UAE for a student visa.

How will UAE expatriate residents guarantee their children a student visa?

UAE laws do not authorize expatriate citizens to continue to sponsor their male children over 18 years of age.

Male students who continue their studies at one of the higher educational institutes in the UAE or abroad are exempted.

Male students over the age of 18 can therefore stay on the sponsorship of their parent’s residence visa as long as they have proof of attendance at a higher education institute for a minimum of one year of course.

Expatriate parents, regardless of their children’s age, may continue to support their female children for research.

Note: New Child Visa Rules Funded by Parents

Starting on 21 October 2018, a one-year residency visa, valid for another year from the date of graduation or at the age of 18, will be issued to students who are graduating from their universities or secondary schools or who are 18 years of age.

Parents are not expected to position bank deposits for this visa form.

The visa would cost AED100 for issuance and renewal for the first time.

Parents must present properly accredited graduation certificates from colleges or schools, whether within the country or abroad, in order to benefit from this program.

Retirement visa for UAE residents

For a period of 5 years, elderly citizens over the age of 55 may receive a long-term residency visa. When the eligibility requirements are met, the visa may be extended.

The UAE Cabinet approved a law in September 2018 to include a long-term visa for elderly citizens over the age of 55 for a period of 5 years.

When the eligibility requirements are met, the visa may be extended.

In order to apply for a 5-year renewable retirement visa, a retiree must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Invest in AED 2 million worth of land
  • Have no less than AED 1 million in financial savings
  • Have no less than AED 20,000 per month of active income

The visa is valid for 5 years and can be extended if it complies with the eligibility requirements.

eVisa for GCC residents

In order to enter the UAE, GCC residents and their partners need to apply online for a visa.

The visa is valid for 30 days, and can be extended once for a total of 30 days, and must be obtained before arriving in UAE.

Notes and Conditions for eVisa

Once your application is approved, eVisa will be sent to you at your registered email address.

If the sponsor does not travel with them, the application for GCC expatriate residents and companions traveling with GCC people will not be approved.

Entry permits for GCC residents are valid for 30 days from the date of issue and are permitted to remain for 30 days from the date of entry. The visa can also be extended once for 30 days.

Entry permits are valid for companions traveling with GCC people for a period of 60 days from the date of issue and which remain for a period of 60 days from the date of entry.

upon arrival, the visa can be extended once for 60 days. If the GCC residency visa is found to be expired or canceled, admission will not be issued.

If the occupation of a resident of the GCC is found to have changed since the issuance of his entry permit, no entry will be given to the holder of the entry permit.

GCC citizenship must be valid for a period of at least 3 months after the date of arrival.

GCC residents’ passports must be valid for at least 3 months from the date of arrival.

Patient and his/her companion entry permits

Under the auspices of the medical facility where he would be seeking treatment, foreign patients may enter the UAE for treatment.

The patient’s companion’s entry permit may be extended only once if a duly certified medical report indicates that the patient needs to continue treatment and that his companion is required in the UAE.

Patient entry permit

Under the sponsorship of medical establishments and state and private hospitals, foreign patients can enter the UAE for treatment.

At the patient’s request, the sponsor (medical establishment) takes responsibility for processing entry permits for treatment.

The Directorate-General for Residency and Foreign Affairs in Dubai grants admission permits for the sponsorship of medical establishments (public and private) to foreign nationals wishing to enter the UAE for treatment. Permits consist of two types:

The treatment entry permit may be extended only once if a duly certified medical report indicates that the patient needs to continue treatment.

  • Patient’s copy of passport
  • A registered hospital letter explaining the reasons for the visit
  • Health Insurance for the Patient
  • Security of finances.

A hospital licensed and registered in the UAE must be the sponsor.

In Abu Dhabi and the Emirates of the North 

Through the eChannels platform, the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) provides treatment and entry permit services.

The ICA covers the emirates of Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah.
