About BU 

Boston University (BU) is a private research university in Boston, Massachusetts. The university is nonsectarian but maintains its historical affiliation with the United Methodist Church.

Boston University traces its roots to the establishment of the Newbury Biblical Institute in Newbury, Vermont in 1839, and was chartered with the name “Boston University” by the Massachusetts Legislature in 1869. 

The University organized formal Centennial observances both in 1939 and 1969. One of the other or both dates may appear on various official seals used by different schools of the university.

Founded in 1839 by Methodists, its original campus was in Newbury, Vermont before moving to Boston in 1867. The university now has over 3,900 faculty members and nearly 33,000 students and is one of Boston’s largest employers.

In 1876, BU professor Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in a BU lab.

The Boston University Terriers compete in the NCAA Division I. BU athletic teams compete in the Patriot League, and Hockey East conferences and their mascot is Rhett the Boston Terrier.

Boston University is well known for men’s hockey, in which it has won five national championships, most recently in 2009.

  • Every year, BU welcomes approximately 20 exceptional pupils to the Boston Trustee Scholars Program. Many of our existing Scholars had perfect 4.0-grade point averages in high school and typically ranked in the top 5–10% of their class.
  • Along with excellent academic credentials, Boston university trustee scholars are creatively adventurous and reveal views, experiences, or accomplishments beyond the usual. They are, to put it differently, not just high students, but exceptional folks. BU trustee scholars also become part of a unique campus community that provides many cognitive, cultural, and social opportunities.
  • U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and eligible non-citizens are considered for all merit awards and other scholarships.
  • International students are considered for the Trustee Boston University presidential scholarship only

How to Apply for a Boston University Trustee Scholarship Essay 

Submit the shared application for entrance to at least one of many undergraduate level programs at BU along with additional supporting credentials by December 1.

  • Submit the Common or Coalition Application and all required materials for admission to one of the undergraduate degree programs at BU before the deadline.
  • Complete the Trustee Scholarship essay on the Common or Coalition Application as part of your application to BU.

BU Trustee Scholarship Essay:

Applicants are to choose from one of the two topics below and submit one essay, and write in 600 words or less, as part of their application through the Common or Coalition Application.

1. School can often seem like work: a set of responsibilities, obligations, and tasks to be completed. But Trustee Scholars are creative and curious, rather than merely dutiful.

Give us a view of an intellectual pursuit or challenge that absorbs you, gives you joy, or provokes your curiosity, and tell us why.

2. One of BU’s most distinguished alumni, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote that “The time is always right to do what’s right.” Is there a time when you sought equity and fairness by challenging a social norm? Or, can you share an example of how you can imagine yourself helping to create a more inclusive and fair community?

National Merit Scholarship

The scholarship is designed for finalists in the National Merit Competition who designate BU as a first-choice college with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation by March 1. It has a yearly value of $20,000 for successful candidates.

National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) Award
