About the California Institute of Technology

The California Institute of Technology (also known as Caltech) is a private research university in Pasadena, California. Caltech is located in Pasadena, California a vibrant and culturally rich city of 140,000 at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains that boasts sunshine year-round.

Caltech’s 124-acre campus is 10 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles and 27 miles from the ocean.

It was founded as a preparatory vocational school by Amos G. Throop in 1891 and began attracting influential scientists such as George Ellery Hale, Arthur Amos Noyes, and Robert Andrews Millikan in the early 20th century.

The vocational and preparatory schools were disbanded and spun off in 1910 and the college assumed its present name in 1920.

Students are required to submit either an SAT or ACT score. It’s important to note that the SAT essay and ACT Writing exam are no longer required.

Besides, CalTech requires each of its students to take and submit an SAT Math Level 2 Subject Test and 1 Science SAT Subject Test such as; Ecological Biology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or Physics.

You will need to schedule and take these exams well in advance to submit them on time for your application to be considered by CalTech admissions.

CalTech requires two recommendation letters from your high school teachers, and they are very particular about where those recommendation letters come from.

One of your recommendation letters must come from a math or science teacher. The other should come from a humanities or social sciences teacher. Note: You ou need both letters.

Lastly, CalTech requires its students to submit a Secondary School Report submitted by their high school counsellor.

This is a special counsellor recommendation form that you will need to meet with your counsellor to set up. You will also need to send in an official copy of your high school transcript.
