A few days ago, Vanguard reported that Athabasca University, Canada, has excluded Nigerian students from its list of foreign applicants to write and pass English proficiency before admission.

This good news came after one Canada-based Nigerian don, Dr. Olumuyiwa Igblalajobi wrote a protest letter to the university seeking the exemption.

Consequently, the University has deleted Nigeria from its list of countries to write the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The exemption also included the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), and all other English language testing required for students from Nigeria.

It has also been a common observation that most students who are eligible for studies abroad do find these language testing systems as a roadblock.

Nigerians who see these testing requirements as mountains can now smile to the Canadian embassies for their visa without the need to provide a high band score for admission consideration.

Igbalajobi argued, in his letter to the institution that Nigeria is an English-speaking country whose people should not be bothered to write IELTS, TOFEL and others.

According to him, since Nigeria teaches its children in English from elementary to tertiary level, this means the country is an English-speaking country.

He also argued that English is the official language of business in Nigeria, hence no need for further tests.

In response to the letter, the school has now updated the list as it has recognised Nigeria as an English-speaking country.

The report made claims that it is not ok for a country that was colonized by Great Britain to be asked to provide proof of English Language proficiency.

Igbalajobi said: “It’s bad to request IELTS from African countries colonized by the British.

“I have written about 12 universities till date. I will continue to identify universities with stale lists and those who wouldn’t recognize Nigeria as an English-speaking country.”
