About Program

A U.S. government lottery scheme for obtaining a U.S. Permanent Resident Card is the Diversity Immigrant Visa program, also known as the green card lottery.

The new and permanent Diversity Visa (DV) policy was created by the 1990 Immigration Act.

The lottery is managed and operated under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) by the Department of State.

It makes 50,000 immigrant visas available annually and seeks to diversify the demographic of immigrants in the United States relatively.

By recruiting applicants in the preceding five years from countries with low numbers of immigrants.

Around 20 million persons are applying for the lottery each year as of 2017.

The statutory-created Diversity Immigrant Visa Program is implemented annually by the State Department.

Section 203(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) allows for a class of immigrants from countries with traditionally low immigration rates to the United States known as ‘immigrants of diversity.
