A Glimpse into the Past
Nanyang University’s Foundation (1955)
Before the birth of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), there was Nanyang University, established in 1955—pre-dating Singapore’s independence from the British. Nestled south of the current NTU campus, the heart of Nanyang University was the present Yunnan Garden. Today, its administration building houses the Chinese Heritage Centre, a national monument.
The Journey to Autonomy (1955-2006)
In 1955, NTU began its journey as Nanyang University, later evolving into Nanyang Technological University in 2006. This transformation marked NTU’s autonomy, solidifying its position as one of the two largest public universities in Singapore.
From Young Upstart to Global Acclaim

NTU is organized into several colleges and schools, each contributing to its diverse academic landscape. From the College of Engineering to the Nanyang Business School, NTU’s structure fosters excellence in various disciplines.
NTU is not only a university but a hub for autonomous institutions, including the National Institute of Education, S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Earth Observatory of Singapore, and Singapore Centre on Environmental Life Sciences Engineering.
NTU’s main campus, sprawling over 200 hectares, is the largest university campus in Singapore. Located in the western part of Singapore along 50 Nanyang Avenue, it boasts a vibrant academic environment. Additionally, NTU has campuses in Singapore’s healthcare and start-up districts, Novena and one-north, respectively.
